Doctors & Appointments & Vaccines, Oh My!

Turning One has meant a ton of appointments for Mr. Chazz.

-His Well-Child Checkup.
You know, the usual stuff and the next round of shots.

-An eye exam. Keeping tabs on his Optic Nerve Hypoplasia.

-Blood work. Checking his blood and his growth hormone levels (cause he’s my little peanut.)

We’ve been a little busy with appointments, ya? All in all, the Kiddo is doing good. At his one year checkup, Chazz weighed 18 lbs and is about 28 inches long. That puts him in the 1 percentile for weight, and the 7th percentile for height.

I’ve been running around behind this kid with a spoon for the past three months trying to fatten him up for this thing and he still dropped 2%. What the…. I’m about due to develope a nervous complex about his eating.

Anyway, he also had to get a round of vaccinations X 3. Which made for a very grumpy dude. And while we were there, the took blood for some tests too. Other than being a little dehydrated from sickness, the first test is fine.

The results from the growth hormone tests won’t be back for a few days, but I’ll keep you posted. I’m crossing my fingers it comes back normal. :-/

His eye appointment went pretty smoothly. The first time, he wasn’t very cooprative. But this time we were able to find out more about his vision. The ONH heavily effects his periferal vision in his left eye. Chazz’s right eye seems to have fair to normal vision. I only he would sit still! But he is able to track and spot things from across the room, across the house even. So I *try* not to fret about it. Like his optholmologist said, he won’t be a pilot, but he’ll be just fine!

Glasses and/or contacts are definatly in his future, as are regular check ups on his Optic Nerve Hypoplasia. I’m still so thankful (Halleluia!) that all of the brain defects associated with ONH arn’t. Hopefully, the growth hormone levels won’t be a problem either.

We’ll know a lot more about his vision as he gets older. Unfortunatly, we have to wait until he is either old enough to cooperate or old enough to tell us. sigh. I hate waiting!

Chazz was one tough dude through all of these appointments. (I’m usually a wreck with these sorts of things.) I think he looked checking out all of the new toys and people. It doesn’t take long for him to have all eyes in the waiting room on him, captivated, and waiting for his next giggle. Such a schmooze!

The Gift That Keeps On Giving

Are we ever going to shake this cold?! I swear its being passed around more than a cheap bottle of wine. Mutating its way around our little circle.

The Hubby has had it, I’ve had it. And now Chazz is facing yet another bout. It’s the gift that keeps on giving. And giving. And giving.

Just a week or so ago, I said to myself, “Self, Chazz is finally getting better. We have our playful little man back.” I mean, he was even attempting to walk all week. He was feeling good.

Until he woke up in the middle of the night coughing and stuffy. Again. –PLUG IN HUMIDIFIER–

Fast forward to noon thirty, and Roman and Chazz are at the pediatrician’s office because he gurgled/burped/projected a tummy full of curdled milk.
(A *little* glad I was at work for that one..)

Did you know that they could do that? And NOT have the flu?? Turns out, the poor dude has an ear infection. Again. And all of the phlegm is making his gag reflex a tad bit sensitive.

This kid is gagging on everything. From his milk to soggy cheerios.

I did recieve a lot of ideas from my Twitter mama-friends, about steaming via the shower and adding Vicks to the humidifyer. (Thanks!) And after tweeting about the never ending snot, I recieved this little spammy gem:

What is it, you say? Of course I googled it. Turns out it’s a nasal aspirator. THAT HOOKS UP TO YOUR VACUUME. To suck out all that stuff, possibly along with his brain. What the… heck.
Not using that on my kid, no thanks. Nuh-uh.

It’s day two and we’re battling this with ear drops and an anibiotics/Tylenol cocktail. On no sleep. Well, Chazz is sleeping ok, snuggled up on my chest to breathe. But somewhere in between the vomiting, coughing, and steaming up our bathroom with the shower, we’ve somehow forgotten to sleep.

Add work on for me, and school for Roman, and you’ve got a good recipe for grumpy.

Don’t you just wish you could be sick *for* them?

Happy First Birthday, Chazz!

Whew! Exhausted. But a few quick notes before bed…

Our Little Monkey is finally ONE!

Chazz’s first birthday was amazing. The Birthday Boy “monkey’d around” (haha…) all morning eating cheerios and bananas while we finished putting together the jungle vines.

We were starting to get a little worried, as he was getting really fussy and refused to nap. Disaster in the making! So Roman and Chazz went on a quick drive to get him to pass out. Works like a charm.

When they got back he slept for 2.5 hours, and right through the first half hour of his own partay! Talk about fashionably late.

But since I didn’t think he’d mind, we dug into the sweets buffet anyway! 🙂 Which turned out wonderfully, by the way. And it was a lot of fun to put together. The chocolate fondue was omigosh amazing, with fresh fruits and various cookies and treats to dip. Oh, and about six pounds of Sixlets. Fun fun.

Here is a peek at the jungle vines (how-to post still to come!). I made them from twisted paper bags with felt leaves and fake flowers. And a lot of monkeys!

When Chazz finally awoke, we served up the monkey cupcakes.

And served The Monkey his own personal (egg-free, frosting-free) banana cake. Mmmm!

With a cheerio on top, per Head Chef Chazz.

…Done for!

Then it was off to open gifts with a little help from dad. Chazz got a lot of fun books and toys, clothes, and even a chair just his size.

What a lucky little man on his first birthday. We were surrounded by family and friends to celebrate one year of crazyfun.

I can’t believe how fast this year has gone, how much Chazz has grown, and how far we’ve come as a family. Happy Birthday Chazz-man! I couldn’t have asked for a more perfect “you”!
